On Friday 21st November 2014, the school council of Cotteridge JI School had the privilege of visiting Cotteridge church, to understand how the Food Bank works. Whilst we were there, we met Nicola and Don who spoke to us about the running of the charity. We were given an order form which detailed a list of every day essentials that people have applied for through the Food Bank. We worked in groups of four to complete the task of putting together a shopping bag to last three days for a person in need. We were able to see how the food bank is essential to many people in financial difficulty.
Ernes- I know understand the importance of the Food Bank for those who are in need.
Maddie- I feel guilty because I get treats every time I go shopping, when some people can't afford a one day shop
Meghane- I felt grateful, as it made me aware of all the things I get.
Andrew- I am very grateful for the things I have at home and I am aware that I am lucky to have them.
On behalf of Cotteridge School, we would like veryone involved in the Food Bank charity.
The school then organised a collection and raised 330kg an excellent result, well done Cotteridge School

Apparently Norman Tebbitt has seen the light after visiting a Trussel Trust foodbank!
I was immediately impressed with the quality and dedication of the people working there to help people in many sorts of difficulties. There was a systematic approach to uncovering the deeper problems which had brought people to the point where they simply did not have enough money to buy adequate food. Some had fallen foul of the bureaucratic processes of welfare support leaving them waiting for, or even denied, the cash support to which they were entitled. In the 1930s they might well have been helped by their extended families, or as a last resort gone to the pawnbrokers. Today, family structures have been weakened with members scattered far and wide, with too many falling into the ever-tightening grip of the pay-day loan merchants. That breakdown of family has also compounded the growth in the number of the lonely, often physically and mentally impaired older people needing support, counselling and help in managing their lives.
There was no slap-happy handing over of food boxes. The staff, volunteers and professionals worked side-by-side through their procedures to establish whether the claimant was genuine and how he or she came to be in such need. Sometimes that was the failure of the bureaucracy of DWP, sometimes alcohol or family breakup – but whatever it turned out to be there was someone at the food bank to act as a champion in dealing with slovenly or unfair process by Government agencies, offering counselling on money management, job-seeking or further education'
B30 FOOD BANK IN COTTERIDGE SAYS THANK YOU
Last Friday evening it was a privilege to hand over a cheque to Nicola Human representing the B30 Food Bank in Cotteridge. We were delighted to raise £1,148.60 during our Lenten charities collection to support the Food Bank. I am also delighted to say that our support will continue in a practical way from now on. We have agreed that each house will collect specific items for the Food Bank initially on a monthly basis. Through the Friday Letter we will make clear the item we are seeking (for example, bags of sugar) and we will publish the results of the appeal by weight house by house the following week. The photograph shows Mrs Nicola Human and Mr Jim Foley head of Thomas Aquinas School with the cheque.

local MP Steve McCabe was invited by B30Foodbank to see their service first hand and to talk to volunteers about why they give up their time to help.
Volunteers at B30Foodbank are rallying together twice a week to provide a lifeline to people who have found themselves in severe financial struggle and have to seek help to feed their families.
B30Foodbank is part of the Trussel Trust network of foodbanks and opened in September 2013, since when it has fed well over 1000 adults and children who have found themselves at crisis point.
Local MP Steve McCabe was invited by b30 Foodbank to see their service first hand and to talk to volunteers about why they give up their time to help.
He said: “The volunteers at the b30 Foodbank work really hard week in, week out to help and support our most vulnerable people who have found themselves at crisis point and have to turn to a foodbank for essentials.
"They do a fantastic job but really, in the 21st century, the question we should be asking is why do we need foodbanks and why is the demand for them growing?"
